How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
After graduating, I received an internship with the Washington Times to work on the nationwide news desk. It was a great opportunity, and I was able to utilize my skills that I learned from my English classes at VSU. After my internship, I joined the United States Marine Corps, where I work as an administrative specialist. In January 2020, I will start my master’s degree in communications with Arizona State University. Majoring in English has prepared me to the best of my abilities, and I am forever grateful to the VSU English professors who helped me along the way.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Majoring in English has enriched my life because I have learned skills that I can always utilize. With my English degree, I have traveled around the United States, interviewed people from the sports industry, political sector and much more. These moments have molded me into the person that I am today, and I am extremely happy with what I am doing now.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
Take every opportunity you can to learn about your major. I would always ask my English professors for advice in order to further my career in the future. My biggest piece of advice that I would give to students interested in pursuing an English degree is to apply for internships related to English. I did multiple internships while I was a student at VSU, and this helped me inside and outside of the classroom. I was able to gain insight on what it would be like to have a career in the English field once I graduated.
